About NUIG Women’s Rugby
2012/13 was an exceptional season for NUIG womens rugby. It saw us earn a spot in the final of the CUSAI Division 1 league and challenge the University of Limerick in a thrilling match which went down to the wire. We also succeeded in securing a semi-final Connacht Cup berth, losing to Buccaneers (eventual winners) and a third place finish in our league.
The 2013/14 calendar, set to be our busiest season ever, sees NUIG competing in Division 1 of the SSI/IRFU (formerly CUSAI) College League, Connacht Women’s League, Connacht Colleges 7s, IURU Kay Bowen Cup and CUSAI Intervarsity Championship.
The past year has been an amazing one for Women’s rugby on a national level too. Fiona Coghlan captained the Women’s team to a historic Grand Slam and the Ireland Women’s Sevens team qualified for the Rugby World Cup and IRB Sevens World Series.
This year also saw the announcement of a Women’s Olympic Sevens Programme to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
