The NUIG Women secured their first silverware of the season on Thursday beating an AIT sevens selection on Dubarry Park.
Officially an intercollege exhibition tournament, AIT and NUIG were the only entries after GMIT’s withdrawal. The GMIT men contested the other competition which featured two AIT entries.
Womens’ skipper Hannah Smith said while the tournament format meant only two games played out, the runaround was a worthwhile exercise for those involved and she hoped it would continue and grow to become an annual fixture on the pre-season calendar.
Katie Kilbane, Edel McMahon and Rita Breen all scored for NUIG, and club newcomer Nora Kennelly shone too. Alex Hennessy proved difficult to contain with ball in hand and Sarah Callaghan’s defensive showing was in part responsible for the clean slate victories to nil. Elaine Johnson provided impact off the bench in the closing stages of both encounters.
