VARSITIES 2012: Day 1 Scores & Review

The 15th Women’s Rugby Intervarsity Championships kicked off at NUIG today, with the fantastic weather bringing a large number of spectators to Dangan. Those who came were treated to some terrific rugby, with these early rounds indicating that two scintillating finals lay ahead for tomorrow’s spectators.

Unfortunately, hosts NUIG were eliminated in the Division One contest, losing to both UCC and UL despite competing bravely. The latter two will now contest the final, a repeat of last year’s, at 15.00 tomorrow.

The Division Two competition is proving to be highly entertaining in terms not only of the closeness of the contest, but also for the rugby on display. Internationals Joy Neville and Niamh Kavanagh made themselves noticed while helping LIT to two wins from three, while displays from Richenda Delahunty (WIT), Jane Hyland (DCU), Grace Sweetman (CIT) and Claire McLaughlin (QUB) turned heads.

Despite QUB’s one hundred percent record today, the Division Two finalist are far from decided. The last round of that competition will take place at 12.00 tomorrow afternoon with the final to follow at 14.00.
