The 2012 Intervarsities lie between NUIG Women’s Rugby and the end to the 2011-12 season. On the cusp of improving their third place finish in the Varsity League for the last three seasons, NUIG will feel heartened by stellar displays admist three straight league defeats.
Their Varsity League campaign ended in unenviable fashion when UCD presented them with a walkover, having been unable to field for the must-win league placing decider in Dangan on Wednesday. With both teams having failed to register a win in the competition this season, an epic encounter was expected.
This predicament may have left other teams wondering whether they had left it too late to salvage their season. However NUIG can look forward to hosting and competing at the Intervarsities in just over a months time, knowing that the best is yet to come.
“It’s been a tough year,” said captain Louise Kelly. “It’s hard to accept excellent performances alongside defeats but we’ve seen how much we’ve developed under (coaches) Simon (Lawless) and Darragh (Keady) over the past few weeks and we can’t wait to turn the performances into wins on home turf.”
“We’ll have a full healthy squad for the varsities. (Outhalf) Katie Kilbane’s recovery from her injury sustained in our match against IT Carlow is going better than expected which is a boost for everyone. Everyone’s dying for the tournament to come so we have the opportnity to play the way we know we can and exorcise the demons from the Colleges and Connacht leagues.”
NUIG have already lined up friendlies against current champions UL and a touring side from Ohio State University in preparation for the championships which will run from Wednesday 28th to Thursday 29th March. In the meantime, thoughts turn to continued training and finalising preparations for the tournament ahead.
