Two well matched sides engaged in a tightly fought battle at Dubarry Park on Sunday with league debutants Buccaneers facing NUIG. Outhalf Alison Nolan was unlucky to have a kick charged down in the closing minutes of the first half; the home side capitalized with a try under the posts, which was easily converted. NUIG had initially focused heavily on their kicking game but began to attack the wings at pace thereafter. Great breaks were made by both wingers, Alanna Quinn and Karen Ravenhill but Buccs defended superbly and NUIG failed to score. Both sides fended many more waves of attack with a well organized defense.
Captain Louise Kelly, NUIG’s player of the game Rachel O’Neill and Mary Mahon were particularly strong at the breakdown turning over many balls. NUIG were forced to step up their game when they found themselves a player down due to an injury sustained by Kelly late in the game. This didn’t discourage the Galway side and they continued to attack and defend ferociously.
Despite the 7-0 defeat, the match produced many positive notes, with the NUIG team consisting of many debutants who performed beyond their experience. NUIG now prepare to face current league champions Sligo RFC in their next game in just over a week.
