Saturday, 3rd September was a historic date for Connacht Women’s Rugby as three separate squads faced opposition teams from Munster in the first of what will hopefuly be a long run of Women’s Rugby Festivals.
Played at Corinthians RFC, Connacht played Munster at u-18, ‘A’, and Senior level not only demonstrating the hard work and commitment of Connacht Rugby to raising the profile of the women’s game, but also demonstrating the growing rugby talent across the province.
Although Connacht ‘A’ team (0-13) and Seniors (18-28) were defeated, the u-18s showed impressive resilience to draw 20-20.
Moreover, NUIG Women’s Rugby were able to boast three representative players on the day: Heather Cary and Carol Staunton who started for the Senior team, and Hannah Smith, who started for the ‘A’ team.
The three will be hoping to feature in the green jersey again this weekend, as they prepare to Face Leinster in Ashbourne on Saturday.
