UCG RFC is delighted to announce that it has received approval for the development of the club academy starting with an U-13 boys squad in September 2011. This is a huge boost for the club in terms of recruitment and is seen as a long-term investment for UCG RFC as the development mandate also includes the establishment of underage girls teams, and will proceed when personnel become available. Currently no women’s university rugby team in Ireland can boast a feeder team, and so the prospect of one being established in Galway in the near future is a distinct and exciting possibility.
Coaching, mentoring, and administrative resourcing will come from within the existing University Rugby Club and will be augmented by support from the mini rugby club – Na Bairneachaí (U-8s to U-12s) established in the Barna-Knocknacarra area in 2007. Subject to a maximum intake of 30, the academy will be open to all 12 year old-U13 boys interested in taking up the game or developing their existing skills. Each successive year will see a new intake so that by 2015/2016, there will be a feeder group for the University’s senior/U20 squads. University support for the development is in accordance with its stated community engagement and outreach initiatives.
A formal launch of the academy will be held later this month. Details will be confirmed over the course of the week.
