Sligo RFC 24 – NUIG 10
Tuam RFC, 23rd March 2011
NUIG, contesting their third Connacht League final in as many seasons, lost an entertaining final to Sligo RFC. Sligo, in their first season since reforming a women’s team, had been by far the most impressive team throughout the preliminary stages of the competition, having reached the final unbeaten in the previuos rounds. NUIG had themselves been on an upward trajectory since the new year and ran their fellow finalists closer than the scoreline suggests.
Following an even first half, during which spectators were treated to fantastic phases of play, Sligo gradually stamped their authority on the game. The result may have swung in favour of the Galway side, but NUIG’s handling close to the line let them down on more than one occassion. However, it was a phenomenal performance against a team which had twice whipped the 2008-09 champions earlier in the competition.
Tries from Edel Siney and captain Alison Nolan, and a stellar team performance from all involved, had kept NUIG in the hunt for much of the game. However, it was not to be and the trophy, perhaps deservedly, went north to the competition’s only undefeated team of the season.
