Ladies Overcome DCU

The NUIG Ladies Rugby team overcame DCU yesterday in convincing fashion with a win that could see them reaching the Semi-Final of the Colleges League.
The result was never in doubt from the time the game started as NUIG spent the majority of the first half in the DCU half. NUIG’s first try came ten minutes in when Caroline Pryce made a run up the touchline after the pack turned over a DCU ball. Stopped just short of the line Kate Halloran eventually got over for the try.The second try came from Centre and Captian for the day Maeve D’arcy. Taking an intercept try inside her own half she ran to the try line touching down with the help of a few excellently executed hand-off’s. The third and final try of the first half came from Aoife Maher as she took a quick tap penalty ten meters out and went through the DCU defence to touch down under the posts. This try was converted  by Maher and NUIG went into the break 17-0 to the good.

The half – time saw a few changes. Mairead Crushell, Nora Hawkins, Eilish Ni Dhiuil and Meadhbh Moriarity coming on. With a strong contingent of GAA players DCU resorted to a kicking game but just could not handle the off-loading in the tackle that NUIG were so good at. A scrum just inside the DCU half was the perfect oppertunity for Scrum Half Kelly Donnelly to break up a large gap on the blindside and sprint untouched to score her first try of the day.

DCU were battling hard and got over for a try in the corner which was not converted. Donnelly’s second of the day came a few minutes later when she made a break and touched down under the posts. The try was converted by Maeve D’arcy. More changes in the NUIG team with Kelsey Chartrand coming on at Ten, Sasha Drozd in the Centre and in her debut Marita Gordon coming on in the second row. DCU got over for two more tries in the second half of which they converted one. The game was finished off in style with a debut try for Gordon as she ran from inside her own half and touched down under the posts and Chartrand converted.

Everyone on the NUIG team played well with the substitutes having huge impacts on the game. The Forwards can be pleased with the amount of DCU ball that was turned over and the backs with the lines they ran and pressure they put on DCU in defence.

And so the Ladies Team go into the intervarsities next week in Maynooth in a bouyant mood and await on other results to see if this Bonus point win will secure them a Semi-Final place for the first time.
