NUIG Ladies Rugby Continue Unbeaten Run

NUIG Ladies continued their unbeaten run in the IWRFU Colleges league last Thursday the 8th of February in a snow covered NUI Maynooth. The final score of 7-7 did not reflect the intensity of the game throught. The first half started well for the students as they worked their way into good field position a number of times but the Maynooth defence held strong.

The Maynooth try came in the first half of the game. NUIG on the attack once again and as the ball was passed quickly out the backs a Maynooth player took an intercept pass on the halfway line and made it over for a try despite a good chase from Full Back Sharon Kelly.  Maynooth converted and despite being in control for the majority of the first half the Students went into the break 7-0 behind.

NUIG emerged with a new determination in the second half. Good quick defence led to a block down on the inside the Maynooth 22 by Hooker Niamh Quinn. The ball was collected by the NUIG Forwards and Number 8 Caroline Pryce got over for a try under the posts. The try was converted by newcomer Kelsey Chartrand.

The students spent most of the second half in the Maynooth half but the winning score eluded them despite coming close a number of times, and so the score finished 7-7.

There was encouraging performances from the new members of the squad with debuts for Winger Kelsey Chartrand and Scrum Half Kelly Donnelly. Newcomers Nora Hawkins and Christine Brehm also made a good impact when they came on in the second half.

And so on an unbeaten run the students look forward to their next game.
