Ladies Team Reaches Final

On a sunny day the NUIG Ladies team reached the Final of the All Ireland Colleges league recently. A tough game was expected here as Waterford IT overcame NUIG the week previous in a close encounter at the intervarsities by 10-7.

It was tough from the off, and WIT made good use of the kick off collecting and putting it through the phases bringing them close to the NUIG line. However a turnover by the NUIG pack led to a superb break by NUIG which saw them rumble their way to the WIT line, finishing letting NUIG down but they were now on the front foot.

The first try of the game came from Scrum-Half Kelly Donnelly. Through some persistent play the scrum half touched down near the corner flag. Waterford hit back soon after with a try in the corner which the conversion was also missed and the score read 5-5. The next try of the game was for NUIG as second row Chris Brehm got over after once again superb ball retention from NUIG. The scores tied up at 10-10 just on the stroke of half-time as WIT got over for another try in the corner which was unconverted.

The second half was even tougher, NUIG got over for a try by Caroline Pryce soon after the restart which was converted by winger Kelsey Chartrand. That was to be the end of the scoring for the game. NUIG had a few other chances but didn’t capitalise. The score finished 17-10. Everyone played well. The pack can be proud of the turnovers and ball retention, especially going forward where a lot of ground was made. The backs defence was solid all day and tackling from NUIG was superb. And so on to a first ever Colleges Final against UL in the upcoming weeks.
